Read more about this nurse's nomination story*:
Laura was a nurse resident at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in 2020 -- possibly the worst time to become a new nurse! But she persevered and has become one of the most compassionate and skilled nurses not only with patients, but also with the many new nurse residents who begin their careers at Vassar.
With patients, Laura connects with them on a human level, providing passionate care and listening to their needs, both physically and emotionally - she treats each patient individually! She never rushes her time with them and always circles back to ensure their needs are met. She seeks out information, asks questions and bridges gaps to ensure the best possible care for her patients, as well as all patients on her unit. Over the last 5 years it has been amazing to watch her grow in skill and confidence in her nursing care.
With new nurse residents, Laura has become a fixture of the nurse residency program, sharing her experiences, providing answers to questions, motivating these new nurses, and help guide them towards success. Laura is also a member of the Nurse Residency Advisory Board to further help guide the program to ensure new nurses get the support and education they need as they transition to the acute care environment. Laura also serves as a mentor to new nurses providing support and guidance along the way.
It is so difficult to put into words how amazing Laura is -- as a nurse, a mentor, a preceptor, a support system -- the list goes on. She embodies all the things this award represents. She shows mutual respect for all and always wants to do right by all patients, her peers, the nurse residents etc. She communicates easily and promptly and prioritizes the well-being of others and keeps a positive spirit.
